[BUG-37795] Massive FPS drop after Viewer Window lose focus - Windows 10 Build 14393.105 and later

    Details

    • Type: Bug
    • Status: Resolved
    • Priority: Critical
    • Resolution: Fixed
    • Affects Version/s: Phoenix Firestorm 4.7.9, Phoenix Firestorm 4.7.10
    • Fix Version/s: Phoenix Firestorm 4.7.10
    • Component/s: Performance
    • Environment:
    • SL Avatar Name:
      Vicky Aura
    • Reported In:
      Firestorm 4.7.9.50527 Release

      Description

EVERYONE HAVING THIS ISSUE REPORT IT TO MICROSOFT AS WELL

I´ve the latest Viewer installed since a few days and everything worked fine.

Since yesterday I´ve noticed a massive fps drop when the Viewer window is loosing focus and gaining it back (like when I use my webbrowser or other stuff).
Scenes that had around 17-20 fps are down to 2-3 fps

That the fps drop when the window is loosing focus is normal.
But it should go back to normal when the window gets the focus back.

Teleporting to another Sim doesn´t help.
      Clearing the Settings doesn´t help.
The only "solution" seems to restart the Viewer.

      IMPORTANT
Before uninstalling the update, please check the Windows build version before uninstalling via Start -> Run -> Enter "Winver" (without apostrophs). It should show something like Version 1607 (Build 14393.105)

Since the Feedback tool apparently only shows issues for Windows versions of the same language of your Windows, you might not see the linked report further down. So it would be good to add your details here as well: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-performance/severe-performance-issues-in-firestorm-viewer/3cb682b1-42f7-4ce0-932b-2535d58fb8d8?tm=1472938615539

I have had the same exact thing happen to me ever since I did the same Windows Anniversary update. (Build 14393)
I also filed a Jira about it. And the only fix is indeed, restarting the viewer.

Is that happening instantly after the first time you tab out or does it happen rather randomly after a few times?

Can you check if the Windows update KB3176938 is installed (Settings -> Update and Security -> Update History)? If yes, was it installed exactly when the issue started? And if you uninstall it, does the issue go away?

Also: Please check the Windows build version before uninstalling via Start -> Run -> Enter "Winver" (without apostrophs). It should show something like Version 1607 (Build 14393.105)

          Hi Ansariel! –

When it was happening to me sometimes it would be random and other times right after the first time I tabbed out. And it does seem that the issue goes away after I uninstalled that update!

          Hello Ansariel,
for me it happened the first time I tab out.
But after uninstalling the KB3176938 update, everything seems working fine again for me.
That update was installed at the same time when the issue started.

Additional note: the KB3176938 update appears in the "installed updates" list again, but with an install date of 1601-01-01 (looks like Win10 is still a bit buggy). But FS still works fine so I don´t touch that.

Severe drop in fps by flipping between windows apps and viewer or zooming out 150 or more meters and zooming in, doesn't happen al the time but has required me to restart viewer 2-3 times a night, over 2-5 hours usage, when i do, its instantly back to super fast with no lag. I never saw this issue previously either.

This issue only started with or happened with the time of me using 4.7.9. My system is one of the fastest around running windows anniversary 10 and latest everything. Sometimes if i flip back and forth between browser windows and viewers or zoom in and out, i get incredible fps drops down to 5fps on a system what is top of the line. I also have internet speeds of 8ms ping, and 160mbps down and 12mbps up as its always been before.

I was able to do some testing on my laptop with a GTX 950M GPU and Win 10 build 14393.

Using an Nvidia 368 series driver, I got the expected FPS drop while Firestorm was not in focus, and whether I took focus or minimized, it came back to full performance immediately.

After installing the Nvidia 372 series driver, Firestorm still recovers from de-focus and minimize.

Unless I'm not reproducing correctly, it isn't failing for me

Yeah sometimes it wouldn't happen with the first try, but after leaving the viewer running for a while and tabbing out. I also noticed that it would happen more often if I got a notification from an app and went to check it, such as Discord. I turned Windows notifs off because of testing but it still happened. I will turn them on now and see if I still have issues.

But at the moment, uninstalling KB3176938 seems to fix it.

We still need feedback from more affected users. But as it turns out so far, the issue is caused by Microsoft's update. In either case, this should be reported to Microsoft so they can fix whatever broke, because future updates will most likely cause include the bug as well. This can be done via the Feedback tool and maybe even better include the steps recorded in the Problem Steps Recorder: http://www.techradar.com/how-to/software/operating-systems/how-to-take-screenshots-and-report-problems-on-windows-10-1307520

In either case, this should be reported to Microsoft so they can fix whatever broke, because future updates will most likely cause include the bug as well. This can be done via the Feedback tool and maybe even better include the steps recorded in the Problem Steps Recorder: http://www.techradar.com/how-to/software/operating-systems/how-to-take-screenshots-and-report-problems-on-windows-10-1307520 Please note that you will need a Microsoft account and bug reports are publically visible, so you might concider creating an account under a pseudonym.

I had done a clean reinstall of the viewer and it didn't resolve the issue. it still dropped the fps after awhile of using it. I did try to test it on the official viewer but I could not seem to duplicate it but not sure if I did it long enough as the viewer did not get me very good fps in the first place that firestorm did and some places gave me very low fps anyways so it made it kinda difficult to try to test. After awhile of trying to test, I went ahead and uninstalled the update and so far firestorm is running fine with no issues as the fps is running fine without being stuck on low fps.

As with Rolween, seems uninstalling and reinstalling the viewer (not clean) seems to resolve this issue completely for me. I'd advise users try this before uninstalling windows updates.

Scratch that, it only delayed the inevitable longer. . Viewer FPS still tanks and refuses to recover.

Yea had the same issue , i just uninstalled the latest update and now it worked right again, a little fun fact that it seems that only the geforce gtx 9xx series is very hard hit by this bug. on older gpu it doesn't seems to happen. have 2 Laptops with gtx 6xx series and one with gtx 7xx series that doesn't have that problem.

Windows 10 Pro user can deactivate automatic update via group Police, windows Home user are sadly out of luck there.

Found an interesting behavior under this condition. The render time (with 40 avatars on screen) is a 400 ms with enabled "Enable OpenGL VBO" option and 120 ms without it. No other options does such a sufficient FPS change. So it is a definitely (compatibility) bug in OpenGL part of Firestorm.

it can't be bug in Firestorm because it only happens if KB3176938 is installed so it means that something in that KB has to be changed that triggers that behaviour.

Just to add a note: I have the 7xx series and I am affected by this. Removing the KB3176938 update DOES NOT fix the problem. So just a note for consideration this may be coincidental and not the issue. It certainly did start after this last series of updates. For me the problem only appears after an hour or more of SL use. Restarting the viewer resolves it for another hour.

One thing I did notice from my GPU monitor is that when the issue occurs, GPU use also falls off dramatically. It looks as if the GPU is just not even trying any more.

          Hope that helps.

I don't think you have the same issue Roslynd Turbo, the fact that you can use the client for more than 1 hour and it doesn't start limitedly after changing and tabbing through multiple programs to get that behaviour strongly suspect me that your problem is a similar but different one.

can you look up your windows version and post it here.

Roslynd Turbo , your version number told me you have the KB3176938 still installed so i guess you removed the update and windows update just reloaded it on the system , you have to block automatic update so it can't be loaded again.

still strange , I have to systems (Laptops) one with geforce gtx 7xx and one with gt 6xx they both didn't show the problem even with installed KB3176938, Ii can only speculate that your problem must be something similar but even different just the fact that it doesn't change if you remove the update seems odd to me :/

You don't have to disable automatic updates to stop getting the update. Get the show or hide updates troubleshooter here from this and hide the update you don't want windows to install. https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/3073930

I know that but it's not natural for a newbie too download some program to deactivate update from downloading , user who have windows 10 Pro can just disable auto download in Group police editor ( Gpedit.msc ) and set it to notify before download and install, The Hide and show update Tool is a nice thing from Microsoft but if ms will alter the KB it will show up again even if ms now released another update that doesn't fix the problem it will install it again and you have to remove it again, I just wait for a response from MS if they fix the issue.

Can one of you who can easily reproduce this provide an Xperf trace?

This is what you need to do:

          • Tick the following options (May change these options, waiting for dev feedback).
            • First level triage
            • CPU usage
            • Disk I/O activity
            • File I/O activity
            • Networking I/O activity
            • GPU activity
          • Run WPRUI.exe again from Desktop\x64\Windows Kits\8.1\Windows Performance Toolkit
          • Check that the options you ticked are still ticked (they should be).
          • Login on the 64bit build of Firestorm 4.7.9 (it must be the 64bit build for this).
          • Reproduce the performance problem.
          • Click Start in the Windows Performance Recorder to begin recording.
          • Record for around 1 minute (the file will get pretty large very quickly).
          • Then click Save in the Windows Performance Recorder.
          • You will see window asking where to save the .etl file. Default location is fine. Choose Save and once it is finished, click Open Folder.
          • This .etl file is the one we need. When you have done this, let us know and also let us know the file size and how big this file is when zipped. It is likely to be pretty big. If the zipped file is larger then 10MB, we need to arrange to get this off you some other way then attaching to the JIRA. If it is less then 10MB, attach it to this JIRA issue.

(Note from Ansariel: http://www.techradar.com/how-to/software/operating-systems/how-to-take-screenshots-and-report-problems-on-windows-10-1307520/2 may also be useful).

After running Xperf, you may wish to re-enable the paging executive.
I've left mine disabled & never had a problem with leaving it disabled though - it's been disabled on my system for over 6 months now (after doing an xperf for Nicky).

If you want to re-enable it, do the following: go to a command prompt and run wpr.exe –disablepagingexecutive off and reboot.
(You can also do this manually by setting DisablePagingExecutive (dword) to a value of 0(hex) under HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management. This does require a reboot.).

The culprit here is the Update KB3176938

Uninstall it by going (on Windows 10) to Start > Control panel > Updates > History > Uninstall

To keep windows from downloading the update again download this tool and run it to "hide" the update :
          https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3073930?utm_source=twitter#bookmark-1607

Also, apparently it's a problem with OpenGL and KB3176938

Unfortunately, it appears that now the AU INCLUDES KB3176938, so that it cannot be removed separately. I've confirmed this with two users today who did not have the AU, installed it and they have the problem, but do not have the update available to remove or block. This is going to get worse before it gets better.

So dont install the 1607 Aniversary Update or you cannot remove the KB3176938.

I have gone back to Windows 7 with 12fps frame rates as In certain busy clubs like Muddys Music cafe , i cant even work the sstage, so i will go back to 10 and FS when MS or Firstorm fix it.

I also was having this issue. I installed KB3176938 a few days ago, and my computer had the misfortune of rebooting today finishing the installation of the update.

It was easily repeatable on my system. The drop happens every time after clicking on chrome, or something that causes Firestorm to lose focus. In my case I started shopping on the MP, moved back to Firestorm after and it was a slideshow. Just a quick glance to something will cause it. Rebooting is the only way to fix it. For extra clarity, in my case, neither firestorm or chrome were minimized. The windows just traded places with each other as they swapped focus.

I decided to try SLV and Singularity next. Both had the same issue for me but it didn't present itself right away. After textures loaded and everything started to look normal is when losing focus on the window caused it. If you have the problem, do give other viewers on Windows a test too.

After uninstalling the Microsoft update, everything seems to work fine. However as a possibly unrelated note, I noticed from the statistic bar (ctrl shift 1) that without the windows update when firestorm does not have focus there is an fps drop. Not as severe, but as soon as it regains focus it raises again. Whereas with the microsoft update it would drop much lower and never recover. If this is a performance saving feature intended to be there, it might be a good place to start looking for the code not playing nice with the update.

The viewer having low fps when losing focus is normal. There's a setting where you can tweak how many fps you want when your viewer if out of focus. (probably to have better performance on windows when you minimize your viewer's window) But the fps should go back to normal when it regains focus. Which is not working after the ms update.

Cannot repro on my system with ATI graphics with AU and with KB3176938 installed. 4.5.0 NVIDIA 372.70 updated recently also, but the
computer I have with it has yet to be updated to AU.
The blame to MS Update and correction by reversal might be a symptom rather than a cause and effect.

Better start fixing Kokua then because your users will get it as well as it repros on the Linden Lab viewer.

I have noticed the Xtreme low FPS after camming around to see other avies and things in the distance. (I call it perv camming) . After hitting escape a few times to get camera back behind my avie, I notice XTREME drop in framerate that does NOT recover and is only fixed by restarting Firestorm, and ultimately by unistalling the Windows 10 update.

I think I may have fixed this on my end.

I noticed that a service wscsve would go crazy and spike to the top of the performance details when it activated, and traced it back to the windows store. The catch is that I do not have anything in the windows store and it was trying to update something so I totally removed the store from my computer.

I used the following sites directions:

          http://www.thewindowsclub.com/erase-default-preinstalled-modern-apps-windows-8

for those that dont want to go to that, these are the base directions:

Type what is inside the "" unless otherwise indicated:

          1) Windows key, type "cmd"

          2) Right click the Command prompt and chose run as adminstrator

          3) In the command prompt, type "powershell" and hit enter

          4) then copy and paste the following command and hit enter

          Get-AppxPackage *windowsstore* | Remove-AppxPackage

(Please note that I had to double up the * marks around windows store because it puts things in bold, the same command is on that site and might be a better source to copy/paste)

This will remove the store from your computer, but it might be something for others that know what they are doing to test and see if it does the same, and maybe to pass on to help narrow it down and get Microsoft to take a closer look at it.

Not everyone will want to remove the store as they might use, it, but I think this narrows it down to something with the Store update service

I really doubt that's the windows Store, maybe it's just a coincidence that your store had gone crazy and peaked your system utilization.

Still wait for the Microsoft investigation to find the problem.

All I know is that before, every time i clicked off the viewer, my FPS would lock and stay at 2-3 fps. After disabling the store update it does not do it any more.

The reason why i removed the store fully was because i do not use anything from it and if you keep it, it keeps attempting to update after a reboot and then I would have to disable the service again..

Removing it makes it so it cannot restart the updater when I restart computer so I dont have to deal with it anymore.

Services include WSService and System Events Broker services

I got the idea to start looking at the store specifically due to site like this:

I know. It took me awhile the last time for it to happen before I had to uninstall the update. It did mainly happen before when I hung around a lot of people especially some that has a bit of a high complexity. I won't be sure until I spent quite some time trying this out after disabling that Xbox gamedvr feature.

Well it happened again. This time I wasn't around a lot of people but around a few and I clicked on a youtube link in local chat but went right back while the fps was going down and the fps was still dropping and stayed down. It never went back up until I closed the viewer and started it back up. This seems a bit too random.

Good chance of multiple issues here. Disabling GameDVR fixed it for me, going on 6 hours in SL now. Whereas before I'd be lucky if I got 6 minutes without FPS dropping to around 2.

Everything stays very well for a long time, but after 12 hours drop the FSP from 40FPS to 30FPS (on the same place) After 6 hours FS in minimalized done was the FPS still pretty good from around 30FPS. After 18 hours was the FPS very slow at they growing not anymore higher as around 10 a 12FPS. Shortly said, i think not this a real solution is and more issues play with this patch of MS.

Here's a workaround that helped me:

For all those who do not need the windowed mode you can switch Firestorm into fullscreen (Somewhere in the graphics options of the preferences), then restart it. Doing so removed my framerate problems completely, but has the disadvantage of the Firestorm vanishing completely when I switch windows in Windows 10. It comes back with the full framerate though when reactivated.

I've read all through this and followed suggestions made all over. but i'm afraid i'm going to have to throw a bit of a spanner in the works.

I updated to Win10 the last day it was free. Biggest mistake i ever done, but that's for another time. I also updated to 4.7.9 when it came out, but it has some bugs i can't live with so now i'm on 4.7.7 again.

I am seriously doubting if KB3176938 is to blame here because i do *NOT *have the windows 10 anniversary update, and i do *NOT *have KB3176938.

However my experience is not exactly how it's been repeatedly described here. People here say the frames drop when the viewer goes out of focus. I'm a multi monitor user so the viewer goes out of focus regularly. However, for me the problem crops up when i use multiple firestorm sessions for when i'm using an alt to for example use as a copilot on my planes.

So, i run 2 FS viewers, i minimize the first running (my main) to switch to my alt. when i go back to my main, the framerate is terrible. If i close the alt's viewer the frame rate stays terrible until a relog.

So again, is it really KB3176938 that is causing this? i don't know... Let me know if you want me to run any tests or if i can help in any way to help resolve this one.

Oh nice find about fullscreen mode.
To activate fullscreen mode on Firestorm, go to Preferences -> Graphics -> General -> Tick "Fullscreen mode" -> Relog.

          For the LL viewer:
Activate the Advanced menu in the top menu bar with CTRL+ALT+D.
Advanced -> Show debug settings -> FullScreen -> Set to TRUE -> Relog.

While running the viewer in fullscreen mode, you will need to use ALT+Tab to switch to a different program.

I have been using this without the cumulative updates and even did the defer updates as Soft Linden suggested in the sl jira although windows did try to download the latest cumulative update but it didn't automatically install it. I did run into my viewer dropping into 5 fps again while it was out of focus but sometimes it did it while I was using it. I decided to try something while the fps was really low by disabling Opengl VBO and my fps went up to 10 to 11 fps. I did not try doing full screen at all.

Edit: My mistake. I checked my installed update and found out that it did have KB3176938 installed. It must of installed it when I went to hide that update so I went to uninstall it but unchecking Opengl VBO did improve my fps when the fps did die.

Because of Windows Update malfunctioning and blocking all updates from downloading , I had to do a System Restore rollback to just after the install of KB 3176938 , and shortly observed all updates downloading including KB3189866. After restart, I decided to do the Full Screen workaround in Firestorm and I was surprised it prevented severe fps drop in most regions. However I was plagued with the bug in 2 regions after riding around on various land and hover vehicles. Unchecking enable opengl VBO did not help , and even seemed to slightly decrease fps. So I decided to Uninstall and block KB 3189866, and all has returned to normal in SL so far

I have had the exact same issue, uninstalling KB3176938 and blocking subsequent updates has fixed the issue but as you can imagine this is not an ideal solution.

          IMPORTANT!

Microsoft have requested that Linden Lab provide gpuview traces from affected systems.
It is preferable that you use the Linden Lab viewer for the trace, but you may use Firestorm viewer if you prefer.
We need to get as many of these traces as possible, so if those of you that can reproduce the problem can take the time to do this, that would be much appreciated.

Here is what you need to do.

          • Once install is complete, the tool install location by default will be at C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits
          • Browse to C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\10\Windows Performance Toolkit\gpuview
          • Your completed trace will be inside the gpuview folder.

          To create the trace:

          • At the command prompt, type in cd C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\10\Windows Performance Toolkit\gpuview & Enter/Return key to navigate into the gpuview folder.
            https://gyazo.com/67ff2cfe78bd2b65786125f7ac942370
If you installed to a custom location the cd into that.
          • Reproduce the poor performance problem on the LL viewer or Firestorm.
          • While the viewer is still running and exhibiting the performance problem, back in the cmd window, type in log.cmd & enter/return key.
          • You will see some text in the cmd window similar to this:
            C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\10\Windows Performance Toolkit\gpuview>log.cmd

            C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\10\Windows Performance Toolkit\gpuview>

          • Wait 30 seconds (don't wait much longer then this or the trace file will be gigantic).
          • After 30 seconds, type log.cmd again into the cmd window & enter/return.
          • You should see new text appear in the cmd window similar to this:
            C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\10\Windows Performance Toolkit\gpuview>log.cmd
            Xperf -stop CaptureState

          • The trace has now been stopped - you do not need to disable it manually.
          • You should now see a file named Merged.etl in C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\10\Windows Performance Toolkit\gpuview
            http://prnt.sc/cjlae2
The Merged.etl file is the trace file that Microsoft need.
          • Zip up Merged.etl
Right click Merged.etl -> Send To -> Compressed (zipped) folder.
Windows will likely tell you that it cannot created a zipped folder at this location and offer to create it on your desktop, say Yes.
You should now have a file name Merged.zip either on your desktop or in the same folder as Merged.etl.
          • Rename Merged.zip to BUG-37795_gpuview_trace_avatarname.zip, for example BUG-37795_gpuview_trace_Whirly_Fizzle.zip
          • Note that this trace will contain a lot of detailed information about your system and for this reason you will be sending your traces directly to Linden Lab who will pass them onto Microsoft.
          • The zipped up trace will probably be too large to attach to an email, so you will probably have to upload it to Google Drive, DropBox or a similar file sharing service.
          • Send an email to Grumpity Linden at grumpity@lindenlab.com with the subject line YourAvatarName BUG-37795 gpuview trace results
            • Include a paste of your system information from Help -> About Second Life (if using the LL viewer) or Help -> About Firestorm (if using Firestorm viewer).
            • Either attach your zipped up trace file to the email (if small enough) or provide a link where your trace can be downloaded from.

          Thanks!

If you get stuck getting the trace to work, comment back here and ask for help.

After having a google, I think the problem is that your region settings are not set to English, the "Digit grouping" specifically.
If you change Region Settings Format to English, or change "Digit grouping" in the Additional Settings menu to numbers without spaces, can you get a trace?

That's what I did I changed it under Region and set formats to English ( USA) so all numbers are now in American format.

in case I did changed it for non unicode aplications too still same error.

          1) My "Fullscreen"-Trick doesn't really work. The error doesn't disappear completely but just doesn't appear that often now, but then Firestorm crashes completely sometimes - something it never did in windowed-mode before.

          2) There is a german version of the ADK as well. Have you tried that?

(The trick is using "de-de" instead of "en_us" in the URL. I'm at work at the moment, so I cannot check this out. I will later though...)

Nope. The german download has the same problem:
          c:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\10\Windows Performance Toolkit\gpuview\log.cmd
"4000" kann syntaktisch an dieser Stelle nicht verarbeitet werden.

Better, but still no cigar. I get two error messages, one with the first start of log_de.cmd and one with the second when it wants to create Merged.etl:

          Problem RESOLVED: See here:

          http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/155479-xperf-error-nt-kernel-logger-cannot-create-a-file-when-that-file-al/

I had to close several monitoring software including NZXT Cam, HWMonitor, ASUS AISuite III and 8GadgetPack, because they interfered.

UPDATE: Now I'm stumped... I can call this

          Xperf -on LOADER+PROC_THREAD+CSWITCH+DISPATCHER+POWER+DISK_IO+HARD_FAULTS+PROFILE+MEMINFO+DPC+INTERRUPT -stackwalk @"c:\Windows Kits\10\Windows Performance Toolkit\gpuview\\EventsForStackTrace.txt" -BufferSize 1024 -MinBuffers 120 -MaxBuffers 480 -f Kernel.etl

on the commandline outside log_de.cmd and it WORKS.
Then I remove Kernel.etl, call log_de.cmd and get the same error as before?!?

          Still trying to tackle this....

          UPDATE2:

I closed Dropbox and Logitech Gaming Software too and NOW it works. >_< This software is teasing me....

So, as a reminder: Close as many other background software as you can so it won't interfere with the monitoring triggered by XPerf.

          Hope that helps... sigh.... _

YAY!, thank you sooooooooo much Microsoft for installing the anniversary update without me allowing you to. Thank you for rebooting my system when i was afk losing all my work and installing the hated update i didn't have before so i can share everyone's misery in massive frame drops when the viewer goes out of focus. I LOVE how you do that Microsoft .

I just read a post on the SL JIRA that this issue has been acknowledged by MS, at least for Nvidia GPU users. It seems to be an issue with the Nvidia OpenGL drivers, and they are working with Nvidia on it. But they are requesting more info for non-Nvidia GPU users.

EDIT: Just saw Geman Guy's post about running SL/Firestorm in full screen. Works like a charm for me. I can alt-tab out and back in, and things are still ok.

I noticed that in windowed mode, my VRAM was getting depleted when switching windows.

Hey out there! I hope I didn't miss that anyone else already shared this, but here goes.

Considering the issue persists continuously as cumulative updates roll out - and considering Win10 Home users can't effectively block updates from being installed and "rollback" doesn't do the job either (at least not for me) - I found an official Microsoft tool to prevent (they call it hide) updates. Its called wushowhide.diagcab and can be found here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3183922

This is how it works for me, it may not be the case for everyone:

          • When Win10 announces that it has an update and schedules a restart, check your updates list to see if it's one of those buggy cumulative ones.
          • Do not restart your PC, but got to "uninstall updates", the one in question will show there, even though the update hasn't finished with a restart.
          • Uninstall the (half finished) update right there.
          • Now restart your PC and you will get a message that the update could not be installed.
          • Run the wushowhide.diagcab -> next -> (wait) -> click Hide updates -> select buggy KB -> next -> Close. Done.
          • WinUpdate will not try to reinstall that particular update in the next cycle.
          • This can be done with any pending but not yet finished updates.
          • And it can be undone by unchecking the hidden updates in the second screens "Show hidden updates" section.

Maybe this helps a few people. Or not. I just wanted to share it, since it works great for me, until this pesky business is resolved.

          Thanks and have fun!

Sadly reducing yield to 0 did not cure this issue for me, I went to a busy sim and swapped between web browser and firestorm and in no time at all i had gone from 20 fps to 0.6 fps

          Same issue for me, i even tryed some of the tweaks done by 'other games' that also have the same issue;

          This where,.
          Disable Team Viewer Service
          Disable nVidia Streaming Service
Disable xBox Recorder and uninstall the xBox App
Reinstall the nVidia driver with setting 'clear settings'
Cleared and deleted the SL Cache folder

While all of this indeed increased my 'start FPS' drastically, it still went like 80%~90% (Also CPU and GPU usage went down, GPU even to an % that was unmeasured by software and video ram usage was down to well, windows usage only) down after switching between tasks, like a Skype call, a website visit, or even opening mail.

I'm curious. For the two people that have tried setting the "Amount of time, in milliseconds, to yield every frame to other applications when Firestorm is not in the foreground window" slider to 0, have you tried a really high number instead? If the idle timer never gets enough time to yield to other applications, does that avoid the bug for now as a temporary work-around?

for me, setting the amount of time to yield every frame to other apps when Firestorm is not in focus to 1000 (which is maximum when going to prefs -> advanced and using the slider) did not avoid getting the FPS drop when in a busy region and switching between tasks. At Muddy's I got 20 FPS with ~30 avatars around me wearing mesh body/hair/clothing (DD 64m, max avatars 42, max complexity 380k). Then after looking at this jira I ended up with 0.8 FPS ...

Don't helped me either, tested with deactivating GameDV before no change.

I just remove the update until this mess is fixed , don't care if ms fixed anything with security, it's not worth the hassle to not able to use Secondlife normally.

QUESTION TO FIRESTORM DEVS : In the past few weeks ago I been running windows 10 I was getting great FPS 18-20 or soo I thought... I actly did some testing and found those results after un-Installing or Rolling Back windows 10 anniversary and it patches approximate 30 days ago..
And tried some trouble shooting Before the PC could auto update me while in windows. In case your all wounding what I have I will tell you here " i7k CPU, 16 gb DDR5 , Nvidia GTX 960 4 gb, 850w power supply. LG FLATTRON E2242" Now granted I should not have a problem running firestorm viewer. Well the answer to that is YES and NO.. Here what I have found out. After doing the Roll Back I found that firestorm was actly running at 8-10 FPS But was with only one viewer running at a time.. So I tryed other viewers also to see what the result would be.. Linden Labs 10-15, Singularity Viewer was about the same at 256m Draw Range. Granted those FPS numbers should be way higher. So I started to Tweak the viewers to see what the problem was. I tryed tweaking NVIDIA Control panel Anti Aliasing, But words looked bad but ran at 10-15 FPS. Un-installed every thing in firestorm save files and going back to Default best I could. And also doing the same in Nvidia.
In my Investigation and hair pulling hair testing the problem was "SHADOWING"... I left everything else on MAX in firestorm.. Guess what I get from setting shadows to none.. drum roll ... 62-70 FPS!!! WOW!
Well why is this you might ask? While back "windows" ie windows XP and windows 7 in 2010. And also covers Nvidia newts driver called FXAA.. Had some Anti Aliasing (AA) Issue.. As Technology software changes the Anti Aliasing (AA) got better. Not 100% True. The newts windows anniversary might be adding to the "Anti Aliasing or also knowed as OGSSAA" thats "Ordered Grid SuperSampling AntiAliasing" My Question is what did firestorm team do in the coding of the viewer for Anti Aliasing? Did you guys try to boost it or did you leave it alone? I need to know.. So I know how to fix this problem.. Before you ask why I need to know. One my best friend has a 28" 2560 x 1440 60 HRZ has the same Hardware specs I do.. but he was getting 20-29 FPS.. From what i can guess his Nvidia software is on default witch means that windows determines the AntiAliasing does not have a bottle necking problem but still has a low FPS hit.. I am still doing more testing to find a fix .... So I need your help.

And tried some trouble shooting Before the PC could auto update me while in windows. In case your all wounding what I have I will tell you here " i7k CPU, 16 gb DDR5 , Nvidia GTX 960 4 gb, 850w power supply. I have found an other way to reduce the fps drop an other part of this trouble i think if you can see on the picture,

          • Usualy my avatar impostor is set to 13 or 15 , and i observ the fps drop behavior.

Well, clear reprod here; Open your stats bar with ctrl+shit+1 , after open your control panel see the max # Impostor under graphic > general set it to 1.

          • You can observ an gain of fps right now

@Jessica i dont even see how that is relevant to the current OpenGL diver issue we see in the anniversary upgrade. That said, i currently would not suggest using the FXAA as it also will try to smooth the font rendering it for most screen rather unreadable. This thus would need a upgrade in the engine, to say what FXAA can touch and what not. And i would think that be not a firestorm job, but more so an Linden labs one, though one could say; there are far more other driver options for both nVidia and AMD that would be better to look in to then worrying about aliasing. Mean i wonder why we still not use fluid mesh, an graphical card option or fluid water, same option. Letting the cuda cores do the work rather then playing with textures. The Second life client int hat is so far behind it is not even funny, and you can in that keep upgrading your hardware, as long SL only basically utilizes OpenGL 3.0 from 2008 (or maybe even 2.1) and not used any of the newer advances. Your graphics card basically yawns at SL as it your CPU that has to do most if not all the work. MFAA just samples multiple frames to try and add pixels in areas it based on the frames could use more or less; The effect in Virtual worlds can lead to a form of blur effect. However these advances have to come from Linden Labs, as per there rules and directive towards 3th party viewers that all content has to look the same over all the cross platform clients, if thus Firestorm was to go and use this all, you would no longer be TPVG and there where our issue also lays as we wont see any advances in the client from Linden Labs towards these things. As if they had that interest they would had added that like a year or two ago and put an halt to some other things like for example, remove sculpties... Alas enough ranting on that topic. Right now we have to wait till nVidia releases an patch or new driver that has a fix for us in this. Neither Microsoft nor Linden Labs can do anything here other then wait till they patch the bug that was identified by all teams in that field.

See https://twitter.com/johnwinkmsft/status/781170950486097924 for that info. As basically what happens is, when your client gets unfocused even for a second, the display driver gets disconnected and you basically run SL on pure CPU mode thus why you get only like 3~8fps depending on the avatars in your area.

          spanks nVidia for being slow.....

My own two cents. I was experiencing the same issue after the update. I have a NVIDIA 970m. I was running the latest driver for 372.90. I uninstalled the driver and rolled back to 372.70 and my issue has gone away. Tried a few tests tonight and will check again tomorrow. Will post an update if it still fails.

NVidia released driver version 373.06 today. Somebody on the LL JIRA reported the issue is fixed for them with this driver. Can somebody who can easily reproduce the issue test if that is true?

The driver release notes list under fixed Windows 10 issues:

Improved the framerate consistency of the R370 drivers in VR games and applications. [1804037]

No idea if that includes the performance issues or if they fixed it under the hood without a notice - or not even fixed it at all and it's all a coindince for now.

I've had quite reliable 1st time out of focus FPS drop since this issue started with KB3176938. I installed the NVidia 373.06 driver and have started Firestorm and repeatedly either tabbed out or clicked out to desktop and to other open windows. After 30 minutes of doing this in various areas (empty save for myself and a platform, a fully-furnished house, and at a club with 10+ avatars) my FPS zips right back up to where it was before taking the viewer out of focus. I will keep my fingers crossed that this is actually a fix.

The release notes for the 373.06 driver from nVidia shows:

          Windows 10 Fixed Issues
 Improved the framerate consistency of the R370 drivers in VR games and applications.
          [1804037]
[372.70, GP100] FPS limiter broken in R370 drivers in windowed mode with high FPS.
          [1814275]
[372.54] Corruption in Overwatch decals. [1816111]

It looks like it was the fps limiter that was the issue that they fixed so I'm reinstalling the cumulative update and the driver update and giving it a try.

Ok I'm back. Installed the Nvidia driver update and put in all affected updates. I got several tabs open, music, and went to several sims. Currently at the one sim that lagged me the most with the affected windows updates installed. No more unbearable laggy nightmare and holding at 25-30fps throws confetti

After installing the updated driver and cumulative update and running the viewer for most of the day along with switching windows lots of times, I have not had any issues with fps dropping on me at all during the entire time. Even when I visit sims that normally caused my fps to drop. It looks like this issue is solved for the nVidia video cards.

Updated nvidia driver from 372 series to 373.06 as well as turned off all the xbox nonsense that I found out Win10 had installed on its own after reading the comments here and now the fps drop seems to be over.

Funny enough I had just noticed that when running multiple viewers, you could make the 'lag' switch to the other viewer by teleporting the affected viewer to another sim.

@Caliente Lemon as far as i know both nVidia and AMD released an driver update to address the OpenGL bug in VR based games. So go check if there is an updated driver for your card and install it.

Hey everyone. SL lag has been resolved for me with the Nvidia update...but has anyone been going through a series of crashed TPs lately? (That is not normal for you?) I will have unexpected crashes every once in a while (not often), but never a TP crash...and I do sincerely mean never. Since SL has been back to normal I have been experiencing this so often that it is now starting to get on my nerves. Sometimes even my browser will crash along with it.

          ----- MY TECH NOTES: -----

              • Nvidia update failed! No FPS improvement. While using Ultra video settings in firestorm. ***

My fix was to go into windows 10 and install a dual boot for Linux Mint OS.
I was able to get 30-60 FPS On Ultra setting while using Linux. Problem is because windows is still using 2 cores and when eating up what CPU availability is left over for other programs to use.

@Jessica there some more tweaks you might have to do on a windows 10 system. Currently some game players hugely complain about the xBox Game DVR, an live game recorder that basically runs 24/7. You might one google how to disable that same for example nVidia Game Stream. Also make sure when you install said drivers to do a clean install of it, removing any if all setting made previously. And from what i read, you just have way to many background apps running if windows solo consumes that much. When i idle my machine it like 1%~2% peeks in one or two of 4 (+4ht) cores. Am sure if you install the same apps on your nice little mint, you would run in to the same issue :3

Jessica This doesn't look right and may, or may not be related. You should have up to 2048MB available to you with that GPU. Did you lower it yourself?

          Texture memory: 512 MB (1)

You may want to submit a support ticket for further investigation.

@ Liffento Eldritch, I get high fps at start then it then a slow grind to 3 FPS with in 25-30 sec I think Its stay 6 fps on ultra, works fine on lowers settings.. The web browser does seem to effect it slightly .. I also tryed running dual viewers at the same time same effect. Thank fully I have a 2nd pc on stand by that uses not firestorm but Singularity.. I have 4 PC all with similarly synonym.

@ Jara Lowell, Yes, I do know about those tweaks, And I have done those.. Tell me some that not documented on a web page or video.... Nvidia is not streaming nor is Shadow play. Now I did have the video card replaced but It was a clean install that i do remember that clearly. Just give you a FYI... CPU Core is at 2%-6% but i do have 3.50 Ghz CPU i know its kind slow.. it not like your 4.5 ghz cpu that your not tell any one you over clocked. My memory is at 18% btw that is at start up and running idle.. and about your cores.. windows does not recognizes 4 cores Yet that part is true said firestorm does the same thing oddly... hopeful soon the new windows Red Stone come out we will see what happens. I did notice that firestorm has unusual reading on idle It start to Use more RAM then its allowed too but then again it only recognizes 2 gb.. And before you say Oh you need to uninstall it and reinstall it... Umm no I tryed that this problem is a windows is using up more 1st 2 cores and leaving nothing for firestorm to use.. its why it works so well on Linux vs windows.

@ Willow Wilder , Actly It did.. I did change it. Oddly does not seem to effect how much is there.. Actly I have 13 gb available that with my browser opened while doing this question.. So what your say that My issue is not a bug.. And my low FPS is user?

I was having this issue as well until just recently. What worked for me was updating my graphics driver. From what I understand, this is due to an issue with OpenGL which there is a fix for in Nvidia driver version 373.06 and newer. I updated to 375.57 earlier this week and have no longer been having this issue at all. There was no need to change my Firestorm settings nor reinstall.

For the record, I am running Firestorm-Release x64 4.7.9.50527 on Windows 10 Pro 1607 14393.321 with all updates as of the date of this writing, AMD Phenom II X4 970 CPU, 8GB RAM, MSI GTX 560 TI 2GB OC Edition.

The remainder of this problem is fixed with KB3201209 (currently an insider update, but should be hitting real Windows 10 soon enough). This part of the problem isn't really specific to OpenGL, it's a more general performance problem when VRAM gets close to full. It happened to start with the same update as the OpenGL-specific problems, so it was kind of a double whammy.

I guess we can resolve this issue then

Hmm you are using the Nvidia driver version which has the fix.
You may be suffering from the other performance killing bug in Obvious's comment above though.
That fix isn't out in Windows 10 updates yet, unless you are part of the insider preview.

Okay someone please explain this to me.. I did some testing and for kicks and giggles I removed all Nvidia drivers all of them from windows side.. Am getting the same FPS numbers as if I was run things them on nvidia side.

MY TECH Side Notes: Textures on objects are taking longer, but for avatars clothing attachments and avatar REZ in faster then Sim objects..
Approximate time to 3 FPS to show 5 minutes in heavy textured sim.

Okay I found why windows 10 did not remove the Nvidia drivers, problem was after removing the uninstall use windows side it left file in there for windows to find.
I downloaded a program called "Display Driver Uninstaller Download version 17.0.3.0" what it does it remove all files and Registry files for NVIDIA and ATI video card drivers AMD.
Any ways I got the newts drivers 375.70 and ran some more windows and firestorm test and same problem is still there.. I think exactly I might have lost 2 more FPS by use the newts drivers . Just guessing am kind bad not wright things down.

Latest driver working fine now, it seems your issue has to be something other on your site.
