[VWR-28607] [CRASH] Right click linked mesh -> crash to desktop [ATI 12.2 Catalyst drivers issue]

    Details

    • Type: Bug
    • Status: Resolved
    • Priority: Critical
    • Resolution: Fixed
    • Affects Version/s: Phoenix Firestorm 4.0.1, Phoenix Firestorm 4.1.1, Phoenix Firestorm 4.4.2, Phoenix Firestorm 4.5.1, Phoenix Firestorm 4.6.1
    • Fix Version/s: Phoenix Firestorm 4.7.10
    • Component/s: None
    • Labels:
    • Environment:
    • SL Avatar Name:
      Whirly Fizzle
    • Reported In:
      Firestorm Beta 4.0.1.27000

      Description

This crash only affects ATI cards on 12.2 Catalyst & only when editing linked meshes containing a certain number of prims.
Affected users do not crash on the 12.1 Catalyst or the 11.11 Catalyst.

System info in environment field is from a user who can reproduce this crash.
This crash affects the V3 dev build Second Life 3.3.1 (250772) Mar 8 2012 03:47:05 (Second Life Development) but not V3 release or V3 Beta.

      Steps to reproduce:

      • Login on Firestorm 4.0.1 Release on a system with an ATI card with the 12.2 Catalyst drivers installed.
      • Teleport to http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Traffic%20Jam/94/229/33
      • Here you will see a mesh bike on a stand.
      • Right click the bike -> edit (crash is usually before managing to get into edit)
      • You will crash to desktop

Number of parts in the mesh linkset appear to be important here:
User reports he only gets this crash when editing linked mesh. Single prim mesh does not crash him when editing it.
If he unlinks that bike, he can edit each piece & not crash. If he links 2-3 pieces, he can edit & not crash. If he however links 6-8 pieces of it, he can reproduce that crash 100% of the time.

Disabling basic shaders stops the crash.

I have a copy of the bike available for testing.

      LL issue filed at: https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-28607
      (https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/MAINT-825)

      User also crashes on my build Firestorm 4.1.1 (27005) Mar 18 2012 21:42:52 (Firestorm-Fizzlefire)
      Crash logs attached
      Clean install does not help

I frequently crash when I right-click on mesh. Both rezzed in-world or worn. I thought maybe it was only when it had a high prim equivalent, but that theory was debunked tonight when a 4 prim-equivalent mesh item crashed Firestorm repeatedly. I have an ATI Radeon HD 4770, and I'm using Firestorm 4.0.1 (27000) Mar 19 2012 16:21:21. I'm running Windows 7, 64-bit. I just downgraded my driver back to ATI Catalyst 12.1 to see if that was indeed the fix as I've seen mentioned over this and simiar issues, and it's still happening. What can I contribute to help get this issue figured out?

          Hi Nedria,

Please can you reproduce this crash and then immediately zip up your entire logs folder and attach it to this issue using more options -> attach files.
Youll find instructions on how to get your logs on this page: http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/file_a_jira
(see the "How to give us your logs" section)

Do you still crash if you turn off "Enable highlighting of selected prims" via Preferences -> Firestorm -> Build?

Please can you also paste in all your system information from Help -> About Firestorm.

Do you use Viewer 3 at all and does that also crash?

Please can you also paste in all your system information from Help -> About Firestorm. Do you use Viewer 3 at all and does that also crash?

          Heya Nedria,

Thanks for the info & logs.
The viewer logs unfortunately dont show much info, but its consistent with what shows for a driver related crash.

Its strange you are getting this on the 12.1 though and that you also dont crash on Viewer 3.
Would you be willing to run a test build of Firestorm (an internal build, up to date with whats currently on the repository) and see if you can reproduce this crash, so we can get a proper callstack from your crash? This would tell us if it was a driver crash for certain.

Sure Whirly, Just point in me in a direction. Anything to help get this issue fixed. As a builder I can't really spend all day with "enable highlighting of selected prims" turned off, so I'd be glad to help find a solution.

Today I downloaded and did a clean install of 4.1.1.28744, wore a mesh shoe, right clicked on it, and crashed. I sent in a report using the crash logger built into Firestorm.

          Heya Nedria!
          Thanks.
Can you reproduce this crash again and attach your logs to this issue, as you did before. The crash reports are sent anonymously, so, we can see the worst crashers but not who sent them. This new viewer version allows us to get a proper callstack from your viewer logs however, so we will be able to see exactly why you crashed.
          Thanks!

Whirly, There's an option on the crash reporter preferences to include Second Life Name now, and I did enable that before I sent the crash logs last night. I've gone ahead and attached the logs here though, too.

Oddly enough the mesh shoe that crashed me last night, didn't today, however a mesh hair that I was wearing, did. As before, I'm still using the video 12.1 driver as in the previous tests. With prim highlighting I crashed, without prim highlighting I was fine.

"The include username option in the crash setting preferences doesnt actually do anything, its ignored atm."

What, a feature implemented that doesn't work? Preposterous!

I have not changed drivers since we last did these tests after I rolled back to 12.1 - though my version shows as 8.930.0.0, not 8.17.0010.1114.

And you still dont crash on the latest release of Viewer 3 when "enable highlighting of selected prims" is enabled either?

Still using the same 12.1 Catalyst driver as the previous post. Using Firestorm 4.1.1 (28744) Jul 9 2012, and the official SL Viewer 3.3.4.262321.

I noticed lately I've stopped crashing on right-click on mesh as frequently, but it still happens on the odd item. Today it happened after entering edit mode, rather than as soon as I right clicked. Here's what I did:

          1. Was logged into Firestorm and rezzed a mesh street lamp. Went into edit mode on street lamp, crashed.
          2. Logged into Viewer 3, went into edit mode on street lamp, everything was fine. Shift-dragged a copy of street lamp and sculpty bench and then linked the two together, everything still fine. Unlinked the bench from the lamp, and went back into edit on the lamp, still fine.
          3. Logged back into Firestorm, went into edit mode on the street lamp and before I could go to move it around, Firestorm crashed.

I gathered the logs from the last crash, and am attaching them above.

Edit: Prim Highlighting is turned on when I crash. I have switched over to turning it off as a test when I find a mesh item that makes me crash, and turning it off always seems to "fix" the problem.

          Nedria,

Have you tried the new 12.8 catalyst driver yet? I have no clue if this will help or not, but its worth a shot.

Though, there is this additional problem with anything above 12.4, see FIRE-6957 for details on that.

As for why you crash on 12.1 on Firestorm, but not Viewer 3, I will ask the devs if they have any ideas.

12.8 is not an option for my video card. The Radeon HD 4xxx series only goes up to 12.6. I downloaded and installed 12.6 and then tested. I still no longer crash on right-clicking on mesh, but I did crash after a few seconds of being in edit mode on something that was part mesh.

I did find something interesting, though I'm not sure if it means anything as related to this or not. When I go into control panel -> hardware -> device manager and look at the driver version for 12.6, Windows reports it as: 8.970.100.3000. When I go into Firestorm -> Help -> About Firestorm, it reports it as: 8.17.0010.1129.

I attached crash logs again, if it helps any.

Since I guessed you might ask, I went into Viewer 3 after this test as well. Still no crashing upon editing mesh.

          Hiya Nedria,

The way the driver reports is normal. ATI drivers have a stange numbering system (several different ways to number from the same driver version). See http://developer.amd.com/download/ccc/pages/default.aspx

Ok, just saying, the 'work around' isn't acceptable for builders, because the highlighting of selected prims is essential for builders, and even for non builders so they can make sure they selected the right object when trying to see what something is, or make sure they have the right object selected when being griefed. I've personally had this issue for months, and would of thought that someone could of fixed this issue within a calender year from the time it was posted. 14 months later.... Guess not.

          @Envy
It is the ATI graphics driver causing the crash - the fix will likely have to come from ATI.

If you roll back to the 12.1 driver you should no longer crash.
I'm afraid it is probably not possible to fix this viewerside.

If you are crashing when right clicking objects that are not mesh, then that is a different issue.

          Disable Catalyst A.I.?

I looked into this before, here are some links:

ATI Catalyst Tweak Guide . . . You can select whether you want to enable or disable Catalyst A.I. for a further potential performance boost in return for possibly a slight reduction in image quality in some cases. If Catalyst AI is enabled, you can also choose the aggressiveness of such optimizations, either Standard or Advanced on the slider. The Advanced setting ensures maximum performance, and usually results in no problems or any noticeable image quality reduction. If on the other hand you want to always ensure the highest possible image quality at all costs, disable Catalyst A.I. (tick the 'Disable Catalyst A.I.' box) . . . http://www.tweakguides.com/ATICAT_7.html

ATI Radeon 4600 - My SL screen turns white and says not responding . . . Try disabling A.I. in Catalyst . . . https://community.secondlife.com/t5/Technical/My-SL-screen-turns-white-and-says-not-responding/qaq-p/2257215

Catalyst A.I., Continued - ATi Hits Back (Again) with Mid-Range X700 line, Driver Tweak . . . At least NVIDIA has learned from last year's protests by users and the press alike and now allows the deactivation of these optimizations. So far, ATI has proved to be quite stubborn in this respect, but at least the company is taking a step in the right direction by allowing the deactivation of A.I. . . . http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ati-hits-back,884-5.html

          What IS actually Catalyst A.I.? - Graphics Cards . . . http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/274340-33-what-catalyst

LL fix pushed in 51206 (http://hg.phoenixviewer.com/phoenix-firestorm-lgpl/rev/8cf82638ba13) - should we resolve this JIRA as fixed and see what happens?
