[BUG-4280] [MAINT-3363] Changing from Ultra -> Low with basic shaders disabled breaks much of the UI

    Details

    • Type: Bug
    • Status: Open
    • Priority: Commitment
    • Resolution: Unresolved
    • Affects Version/s: Phoenix Firestorm 4.3.0, Phoenix Firestorm 4.3.1, Phoenix Firestorm 4.4.0, Phoenix Firestorm 4.5.1, Phoenix Firestorm 4.5.2, Phoenix Firestorm 4.6.1, Phoenix Firestorm 4.6.5, Phoenix Firestorm 4.6.7, Phoenix Firestorm 4.6.9, Phoenix Firestorm 4.7.1, Phoenix Firestorm 4.7.2, Phoenix Firestorm 4.7.3, Phoenix Firestorm 4.7.5, Phoenix Firestorm 4.7.6, Phoenix Firestorm 4.7.7, Phoenix Firestorm 4.7.9, Phoenix Firestorm 4.7.10

    • Reported In:
      Firestorm 4.3.0

      Description

Can maybe still trim down the repro, but:

      • Set graphics on Ultra (deferred will be enabled by default)
      • Set graphics on Low
      • If your card has basic shaders disabled by default on low, bug will repro already
      • If your card has basic shaders enabled on low, disable basic shaders and bug will repro
      • Flipping basic shaders back on makes everything look normal again. However ionce this bug is triggered, UI rendering will break when basic shaders are disabled on any graphics setting until a relog.

      Much of the UI breaks:

      • Scripts get a black background
      • History graphs in stats bar are blacked out
      • Text & icons in top bar render badly
      • Borders go black eg) those in preferences floater
      • Notecards are black
      • tear_off bars and spacer lines disappear from menus
      • Highlighted text colour is black
      • Pie is black
      • Color picker broken
      • Menu background is invisible

      etc etc etc

      • Bug does not repro on 4.2.2 Release
      • Bug does not repro on Viewer 3 release or beta

I can repro this, only I did not have to make the big jump from Ultra to Low. I simply went from Mid to Low and found the following: blue script dialogs were transparent; white notecards were black; pie menu, which had been custom-colored beige with blue highlights, was black with no highlighting color.

If I turn basic shaders on after switching to Low, the colors all go back to normal. Turn basic shaders off, they bork up again. Turn them back on, they return to normal.

Only relogging allows me to use Low graphics normally again (i.e., without basic shaders).

I am getting this issue on the new nightly 4.4.0.32188 with both a dirt and clean install. even tried the nightly with all pref files and cache cleansed from the 4.3 release.
Transparent menue once bug is triggered, menu items in top bar have that weird font in the screenshot.
Strangest thing for me though is that the basic shaders and advanced shaders are greyed out until I set high or ultra settings. Water reflection settings are greyed out seemingly randomly. I can't set deferred rendering, shadows at all in the nightly.
Yet the graphics driver and card is the same as in 4.3 which has no issues at all with rendering.

I have the same problem as Monderas Bristol, and have the identical graphics card at the same settings, all linked around the 'Basic Shaders' settings. I have met people with the same problem on the same card and am beginning to wonder if its a card issue. I have the latest update on my card which has not fixed the issue after doing the other usual recommended fixes. Perhaps a patch could be a solution in this instance?

Whirley, should i comment here? i extracted the files per the link above and a strange thing happened. When i went to log back into firestorm, it showed a message that my ATI Radeon graphics card had changed from ATI Radeaon 6770m to ATI Radeon 6700. I havent changed my card though, just extracted that file per th link. Is this ok? Thanks, Jane Fetiocci

          1. Should my graphic settings for "quality and speed performance" in th general tab be set on certain settings? I have it at 'mid-medium' currently, anything under 'shaders' should be unchecked and should enable openGL vertex buffer be checked or unchecked?

I noticed now there is no problem with the menus turning invisible and i can access the settings on the top right menu. I can also highlight folders in my inventory with no issue

This bug now reproduces on Viewer 3: https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/BUG-4280

On V3, its necessary to have basic shaders disabled and have bump map/shiny enabled to reproduce this but the UI breakage caused is exactly the same.

In 4.7.1 QA build 45323 the UI does not break if you /just/ change graphics say from high to medium low, then turn off or on various shaders. If you however attempt to turn off shaders first, then change from high to medium low, basic shaders turns itself back on, and clicking again to turn it off renders the UI transparent.

On 4.7.1, behaviour is now in line with the LL viewer repro.
To repro - login with shaders enabled, untick basic shaders then untick bump mapping & shiny.
